A Brief History of the Safety Harbor Herald:
In 1915, A.G. Waldron began the town's first newspaper, calling it the Tropical Breeze. He quickly grew tired of publishing and in 1916 the paper was sold to Alva Ernest Shower, who renamed it the Safety Harbor Herald. A.E. Shower had previously been in the newspaper business in Madison, WI. He, his wife Edith, and his sons published and printed the paper every Friday at 515 Main Street. His son Franklin took over as publisher in the fall of 1957 after A.E. retired; he eventually died in 1961. Franklin would continute to operate the paper until his death in 1975. In 1976, it was purchased by Tarpon Springs city commissioner and community activist Bea Raynard and her husband Ray. Jean and George Graham purchased the paper from Raynard in 1987. The Safety Harbor Herald ceased publication in June 1989.
